Zuber & Taillieu’s Patrick Del Duca Publishes Book on Language and Law
Published by the American Bar Association, the work is an exploration of the cross-border challenges and opportunities of language in today’s global marketplace.
Patrick Del Duca, a partner with Los Angeles-based law firm Zuber Lawler & Del Duca and co-chair of the Mexico Committee of the American Bar Association’s Section of International Law, has written his first book, Choosing the Language of Transnational Deals: Practicalities, Policy and Law Reform. Published by the American Bar Association, the work addresses complex legal topics across diverse cultures and languages―all in terms relevant to readers in business, trade, economics, political science, government and international organizations, as well as law and even foreign language instruction.
“Language is critical to defining a deal,” said Del Duca. “Although parties communicate with each other in whatever language they choose, the governmental authorities with whom they must interact, work only in official languages. I wrote this book to highlight the global benefits of policies that facilitate respect of the language preferences of deal parties in cross-border transactions—vital information that few people fully appreciate.”
Written for language enthusiasts and cross-border dealmakers as well as legal professionals, Del Duca’s book investigates how language shapes transnational deals, plus the impact of law and language on global commerce, with special focus on cross-border secured lending and commercial arbitration. Del Duca draws on his experiences in common and civil law countries, offering examples from English-, French-, Italian-, Portuguese-, and Spanish-speaking places in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe.
A parallel message is insight to deal makers on how to structure their business in a multi-lingual economy spanning borders. Choosing the Language of Transnational Deals: Practicalities, Policy and Law Reform offers readers maps of how to navigate languages and legal systems. It also focuses on profit, growth and integration achievable through attention to language and the passions it engages.
In addition to his leadership role with the American Bar Association, Del Duca is a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy, and teaches as an adjunct professor at UCLA, Loyola, and UC Davis Law Schools ― offering courses in International Finance, European Union Law, Latin American Infrastructure Development and International Joint Ventures. Del Duca is named in the 2010 and 2011 editions of The Best Lawyers in America®, reflecting his law practice in matters of cross-border business launch, maturation and exit, infrastructure development and financing, financial restructuring, and environmental matters.
