Zuber & Taillieu
International Law
Latin America
Zuber & Taillieu is home to an exceptional group of attorneys providing dynamic and sophisticated legal representation to clients with Latin American interests. Working both domestically and across borders, our business and legal insight focuses broadly on corporate, commercial, tax and financial challenges, with specializations in corporate finance, financial restructuring, mergers & acquisitions, litigation matters, infrastructure development and finance. We have attorneys able to work with legal documents in Portuguese and Spanish not only because of their knowledge of those languages, but also because of their training in the civil law systems that prevail in Latin America, thereby obviating the need for translation, whether of language or of explanation of the significance of legal concepts.
Our lawyers have assisted with matters involving Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. As an example, one of our attorneys has outstanding experience in Brazil and Mexico, serves as Co-Chair of the Mexico Law Committee of the American Bar Association’s International Law Section, is a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy, and has taught as an adjunct professor at UCLA law school on the topic of infrastructure development in Latin America.
Notable Representations by Our Attorneys:
- Infrastructure Development and Finance: Development, financing, purchase and sale of energy (e.g. power plants, ethanol production), telecommunications, transportation (e.g. pipelines, ports, rail projects, toll roads) and other infrastructure projects;
- Financial Restructuring: Representing bondholder and other financial creditors, with a particular emphasis on emerging markets, e.g., in the restructuring of two Latin American telecommunications companies, with NYSE-listed securities;
- A Southern Cone shipping company, in refinancing a debt and renegotiating the inter-creditor agreement with the IFC;
- A United States importer, in establishing a Maquiladora enterprise in Mexico.
